  10.  AB    A number of animal-associated infections occur in persons infected with
  11.        the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including those due to
  12.        Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium, Microsporida, Salmonella,
  13.        Campylo-bacter, Giardia, Rhodococcus equi, Rochalimaea, and Listeria
  14.        monocytogenes. Most of these infections, with the exception of those due
  15.        to Rochalimaea, appear to be acquired by the immunosuppressed individual
  16.        from sources other than exposure to animals. Drs. Glaser and colleagues
  17.        review our current understanding of the role of exposure to animals,
  18.        especially pets, in the natural history of these opportunistic
  19.        infections. They suggest that the risk of zoonotic transmission is small
  20.        and offer practical suggestions designed to reduce this low risk. They
  21.        conclude that the benefits of animal companionship outweigh the risks to
  22.        patients and that prohibition of pet ownership by individuals infected
  23.        with HIV is not warranted.
